This beautiful WOOD barn belongs to my friend, Barb. Barb lives in Pinyon, which is halfway between our home in the desert and the mountains where I board my horses. She has 3 horses, a turkey, several goats, and 4 dogs (all from the streets near her school). She also has 3 chickens and I'm absolutely in LOVE with one of them! Hehehehe....Barb, I didn't STEAL your chicken! I always have fun visiting her and her animals and she occasionally comes and helps me with Scout (who she is absolutely in LOVE with)...she wants to adopt her own mustang someday! Anyway, she's been my friend now for over 15 years, ever since we both taught together many, many, many years ago! I always enjoy stopping by her place on my way to the horses. This barn and windmill can be found in Ramona, CA, which is only an hour away from where I board my horses. We traveled through Ramona on our way to San Diego a couple of weekends ago. This is fairly typical of the modern, newer barns in our area. Old barns are hard to find here in Southern California because there just aren't that many still standing. I've posted about this barn before, but it is such a unique, old barn that when hubby and I drove by it this past weekend, I had to stop and take new photos of it. Last time we were there, it was full of cows! There was one bawling in it and a couple more around the back. I'm not sure how much longer it will be around, so I'm glad we stopped by it and took some pics! Barn Charm for September 27, 2011. I stopped this RED barn near (of course...) Red Mountain. Red Mountain is near Flagstaff, AZ. I stopped, jumped out of the car, and took these photos. It was windy that day and cold! Hubby and I drove to Julian, CA last weekend just to get out of the desert heat and I saw this renovated BARN. Of course, I had to get out and take photos. I wasn't sure if it was open for business (it was a restaurant/bar), but it was closed and deserted...sigh...what an incredible place! Look at the doors and windows! This is the barn over at the old Bayley house, in Pilot Hill, CA. While the house needs restoration, the barn is in good shape. The community has several fundraisers here at the barn and we just missed the one last month. This barn is outside of Bishop, CA. Hubby and I pulled off on this side road on our way home in February, during the Presidents' Day 4-day holiday. This is the barn from my childhood. My parents bought this 10 acre ranch when I was about 8 years old and kept it for about 8 years. They bought it as an investment and never had horses there. Instead, it was their weekend getaway from the chaos of Los Angeles. We went down there almost every weekend. I remember the barn roof when they bought it. It was full of holes. There were owls in the barn! My father decided to install an aluminum roof on it (I guess that was his project). I'll always remember when he and my uncle were on top of that barn, pounding in the nails to hold the aluminum panels, perched up there with a rope tied around their waists in case they fell. Yes, my dad and uncle reroofed that entire barn!!! I would go off exploring the 10 acres and sometimes more. At that time, during the 1960's, there were only a couple other ranches on the road. There was a ranch right across the street and I became friends with the young man who lived there with his parents. His grandfather also lived on his own house on their spread. I used to hike in the hills and my dad would find rattlesnakes all the time (there was a reservoir at the top of the hill), and I heard many of them in the bushes. Finally, when my parents sold the ranch, but kept the second trust deed, I would go riding in those hills bareback, borrowing a horse, and hear the rattlesnakes, or the horses would! The hills were crawling with them at that time. Now, those same hills are developed (or over-developed.) This ranch is in Vista, California, not too far from Camp Pendleton and on some afternoons, we could hear the goings-on at the Marine base. Because it is close to the ocean, the fog would roll in sometimes and I remember how the clouds would hug the hills until about 10:00 a.m. During the summers, however, it could be quite warm (not HOT, like our desert, but "warm") and on those lazy days, sometimes I would just read a book. There was another white barn higher up on the property, but it was pretty run down and I didn't like to poke around in it alone. This red barn has been refurnished. The original tack room is gone and the inside has been redone. But, the aluminum roof that my father put on it so many years ago remains intact. I used to roam around this barn, as a kid, and smell the tack room smells, sniff the odor of long-gone hay, and try to imagine that someday I would have my own horse. Now, as an adult, I have 5 horses of my own, but no barn to put them in! Ahhhh.....someday! Of course, I would love to have a barn modeled after this one, the barn of my youth, but I don't think that will ever be possible! I hope you have enjoyed this tour of the red barn! In April of 2009, I posted my first post on this blog. It was about a red ranch house in my town, Palm Desert, CA. Now, for those of you who know Palm Desert, you know there aren't any ranches left. It is nearly wall-to-wall housing or hotels. So, I have kept my eye on this red ranch. Here's the link to that first post: http://southwestbarns.blogspot.com/2009/04/red-ranch-palm-desert-ca.html So, you can imagine my horror when, as I drove by it today, I glanced over from the freeway and it was GONE! I got off the exit and drove up. It was lightly raining, the sky was dark, and it was a cold day. Our local mountains had disappeared behind the storm clouds. Very forboding. It was with a sinking heart that I drove up to the ranch. Yup. Gone. Neat piles of debris. One massive tree was lying on its side. Two others were still standing. I still remember the hawk that flew by me on one of my visits. I hope that the trees will remain, but I doubt it. The hawk will have to find a new territory. I posted some photos that I took of it in December of 2009, on one Saturday morning when the desert had a winter storm. The clouds parted and I caught the top photo, with the sunlight shining directly on the ranch house. This was and is one of my favorite photos. Hubby and I took a side road outside of Lone Pine last weekend and discovered a pasture full of mules and horses. And, beyond that pasture was this wonderful BARN! I haven't seen a barn this nice in quite a while! In fact, I haven't posted for quite a while...sigh...This was our first vacation since last August and I've pretty much exhausted the supply of barns near our home. Time to get out and explore! While the red barn of my youth is still my favorite, I combed through my photos to find two different barns or ranches. The bottom one is what I call the "red ranch" which is actually located in Palm Desert, CA! YES! A ranch here in my home town! While it doesn't have a spectacular barn, I love driving by the ranch house. It is in a state of...disrepair...and I'm sure it is scheduled to be torn down, so I try to stop by it every now and then. I like this photo because it shows its "disrepair". At one time, I'm sure it was a lively, thriving ranch. Now, only the wind whispers in its empty shell. Very sad. The top one is a barn near Bridgeport, California. It IS a working ranch and barn and hubby and I stopped there in June, when the fields were blooming. This old barn has been in Oak Grove for many, many years, according to Cathy. Cathy is the wonderful woman who boards my horses in our local mountains. On this afternoon, I had worked a couple of the horses at the ranch and, since it was a nice COOL DAY (yesterday it was 109 here in the desert...sigh...), I went driving out toward Anza/Borrego on Coyote Springs Road. HAhahahah! This was an easy post! "B" is for barn! This beautiful, old, red barn was outside of Mariposa, CA, up by Yosemite National Park. The cows must have been hungry! They realized that humans brought food and were all lined up by the gate! They came in from the pasture, looking for their breakfast! Poor things! When we drove past Merced to Mariposa, on our way to Yosemite National Park, during our vacation, we drove past this ranch. Finally, one day we stopped. The cows must have been hungry because they came right up to us at the gate and mooed at us for their breakfast! The barn was deserted, the gate was locked, and the cows were hungry. They were beautiful cows and appeared to equate people with food, so I hope they got fed!

Snake! ~~ warning snake pics!

I posted this on one of my other blogs, but thought I would repeat it here since summer is coming and that means SNAKES! I have absolutely NO ADVICE for anyone! All I do is scream, "AAAaaaaahhhhhhh", jump up about 3 feet in the air, and then bend over to see if it is poisonous or not. Of the 5 snakes I've met so far, they have all been non-poisonous. You'd think by now I'd quit screaming, but I don't! Two of them were right by the water faucet at the horse ranch, 1 I nearly stepped on a couple of weeks ago, and another one was heading for a pile of boards at the ranch. The latest snake, a gopher snake, was this one. Hubby and I were looking at another ranch and he was inside the locked gate, stuck in the pool. He probably had been eating the frogs there, but he definitely wanted OUTTTTTTTT!!!!! He tried and tried to crawl up the side of the pool, but he just couldn't reach his head up far enough. I didn't wish to see him drown, so I asked hubby to "do SOMETHING!" He found a pool skimmer and skimmed the snake up and out! Isn't he a handsome fella? Anyway, once out, he headed for the rocks along the pool. (shudder)...WHY would anyone build a pool like this? Maybe they had cats to keep the snakes away? Anybody have a snake story to share?

My parents owned this ranch back in the 1960's. The roof on the barn was wooden and crumbling. I remember big holes in it. My dad decided to reroof it, using aluminum sheeting. I remember him on top of the barn, tied with a rope around his waist in case he fell off! He didn't and the roof survives to this day. The barn has been cleaned out and is in wonderful condition. This is now a working equestrian center and the owner gave me a wonderful tour! While this is no longer my world, I have many fond memories of this ranch and its barn! That WAS my world, many years ago!

If a barn could have eyes, these would be them! These "eyes" look out over the ranch and see everything! See! They are even open today! This is the barn from my childhood, in Vista, CA. The barn is still standing. It is a magnificent old, wooden barn, except for the aluminum roof that my dad put on it in the 1960's. The roof is still intact, as is the barn. No other barn I have found measures up to this one. It is cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It is now owned by some wonderful people at Quail Hollow Farm. Sunday Stills for May 17, 2009.

We found this delightful red barn on our visit to Ramona, CA. Isn't it wonderful? I LOVE red barns. My parents' 10 acre horse ranch in Vista, CA had a red barn (we never had horses on it...it was just a weekend getaway!). My dad actually re-roofed the entire barn! I don't have any digital photos of it, but I'll be sure to get some this summer! I always compare all the other barns I see to that one on Little Gopher Canyon Road near Vista, CA.

On our way to Ramona last week, hubby and I came across this lonely windmill and ranch entrance. Not exactly a barn, but in "barn country"...i.e. Ramona. It was a beautiful, crisp, clear spring day...not a cloud in the sky! But the sky was full of wonderful Southern California sunshine! This delightful barn(?) is located in Sky Valley, CA. I've driven by it and admired it for years. Out here in our desert, we don't really need traditional barns. Instead, most ranches have the metal roofs over their corrals for shade protection. But, this little barn(?) is quite functional. One side stores hay and the other side stores the various rakes and shovels needed for corral cleaning. Isn't it cute? That's My World for April 14, 2009. I'll try to get some better photos today when hubby and I drive back there to check out some other ranches.

Red ranch, Palm Desert, CA

I've lived in Palm Desert over 33 years now and it wasn't until this year that I even saw this red ranch. It is right off Interstate 10, off the Cook Street exit! I only happened to finally catch a glimpse of red one morning as I was driving to school and I couldn't WAIT until the end of the day to return and take some photos. It turns out the ranch is now empty and deserted, abandoned like so many homes and ranches these days. But, what a life it must have had! It had a huge house (two stories), a pool, a large garage, and some kind of shed. Imagine it in its prime! WOW! There is a mobile home park across the street now and I imagine the property is now zoned for commercial development, since it is only a block away from a very busy freeway interchange. I found a discarded doll and some childrens' toys on my visit. What a sad commentary. I wanted to document it while it is still standing because my next visit, it COULD be gone! Rather than start with my barn photos, I thought I would pay homage to this wonderful red ranch. Enjoy the photos. It may not be around much longer.

Welcome to my newest blog, southwest barns. I wanted to devote a blog JUST to barns and maybe ranch buildings. Where I live, in Southern California, we don't always see barns anymore, but...just once in a while...one pops up and I rush out to photograph it! Living in the desert, most horse people do NOT have barns, but, up in the mountains, people do. I was thinking about limiting this to Riverside County, but since hubby and I frequently travel to both Arizona and Utah, I decided to call it "southwest barns", since I'll be on the prowl for barns in those states as well.
So, come on in, take off your shoes, and visit for a while! Welcome!
